I got this very inspirational piece in the email yesterday, but did not have time to sit down and read it. I just did, and thought maybe I should share this with you. It has opened up my eyes to some of the things that I have never thought of, and I hope it does the same to you too *smiles*

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, “Tell me what you see.”

“Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” she replied.

Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma.

The daughter then asked, “What does it mean?”

Her mother explained each of the objects had faced the same adversity - boiling water. Each reacted differently.

The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak.

The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.

The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.

“Which are you?” she asked her daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?”

Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you.

When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.

The happiest of people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can’t go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.

You may copy this and send it to those whom you think need some motivation. It will make their day, like how it has made mine *smiles*

.. and then claimed that he was “contributing to my blogging legacy and mental well-being.”

The bad news is that I have already done a similar meme in January. But the good news is that I am going to do this one also because I want Moz to know that he is not the only one who does memes.. *winks* I personally think that doing memes (like this particular one) is one of the many ways fellow bloggers learn about each other. Anyway..

10 years ago:

1996. I was in Form 3. Life was great back then. Good school. Great teachers. First class. Great friends. No worries.

5 years ago:

2001. I came to KUSTEM (then known as KUT) without an idea of what I was to do here. The institution was in the midst of breaking up from UPM and standing alone. The course I was offered was apparently a new course, only 2 years old. The lecturers were GREAT though ;) The courses were interesting. The field trips were FUN. The people I met were amazing.

1 year ago:

2005. Enrolled as a post-graduate student and started working on my Master of Science degree. But I spent a lot of time working as a Research Assistant, doing things that were not related to my project. Biggest achievement? Co-organizing “Terrapin Independence Day” on Moz’s birthday.

Yesterday:

Two of the people I called “my friends” treated two other friends whose birthdays fall in July for dinner in town. I was not called along, though I really did not mind chipping in for the food and all. It was purposely kept a secret, I assume. One of the birthday boys later SMSed me and apologized for keeping it a secret and asked me not to be angry. I told him that I wasn’t angry, and that I was only disappointed.

Maybe it’s me. You know, when things go wrong, I cannot just blame it on other people. Maybe it’s me.

Anyway, I feel so much better when I got up this morning. In fact, I would have forgiven and forgotten about the incident if it wasn’t because this meme reminded me of it..

5 ideal places to run away to:

  • I want my Mum and Mei Mei to be happy and healthy
  • I want to quickly graduate with my Master’s
  • I want to get a job upon graduation

5 things I should be doing now:

  • Prepare the d*mn Progress Report to be submitted to the Graduate School
  • Err.. Have lunch? But it’s only 11:30am!

5 biggest joys in life:

  • To see my sister succeding in everything she does
  • To hear my grandparents’ laughters and see their smiles
  • To learn that Mum actually shed tears of happiness on my Graduation Day 2 years ago
  • To be able to help those in need

5 people I am tagging:

I don’t think I will be tagging anybody because most of you have already done this, or something similar to this..

A couple of days ago, darling Emma EJ sent me a forwarded email, entitled “Pictures that make you smile” and needless to say, consisted of a few heart-warming and funny pictures that really made me smile, like this..

and this..

and this..

But this picture freaked me out!!

And I think I have kind of really, really made up my mind to just adopt a kid, or some kids, instead *shrugs* Thanks, EJ, for helping me make THAT important decision :)
