This is a community service message ;)

For those who don’t already know, Eden Handicap Service Centre, which is based in Penang, is the only handicap centre in the state that provides FREE facilities to the disabled. It was founded in 1991 “to help the disabled to come to terms with their disabilities, to engage them in fellowship with other disabled and able-bodied friends, and to provide adequate trainings to place them in suitable jobs”.

However, like any other charity centres in Malaysia, the biggest hurdle in the running and maintenance of the centre revolves around its finances, or rather the lack of it. The increase in daily expenses, coupled with the decrease in sponsorships and donations in recent years have been a major challenge to those who are directly involved in the centre.

Hence, I would like to appeal to all good Samaritans out there to donate a fraction of what you earn to Eden. It does not matter how much, as long as it comes from the heart. Please be assured that your donation goes a long way in ensuring that the handicapped continues to enjoy the little priviledges that the staff of Eden initially gave them.

We are fortunate enough to be born without disabilities, to be able to take care of ourselves, to be able to go to school and meet new friends, to be able to travel across seas and continents. But let’s not shut an eye towards people who are less fortunate. These people may NOT be able to take care of themselves, they may NOT be able to contribute to the country’s economic growth, heck, they may NOT even be able to make the mandatory trips to the hospital for check-ups if not for the kind-hearted people who started Eden in the first place.

If you would like to contribute to the society as well as to the well-being of these people, please channel your donations to:

Name: Eden Handicap Service Centre Berhad
Bank: Southern Bank Berhad
Current Account No.: 160 600 9209
Swift Code (for foreign sponsors): STHBMYKL

Note: Kindly send an email to Madelene Tye, at edenhdc@yahoo.com with your name, address and the amount donated to facilitate the issuing of an official receipt.

But if you would rather donate in terms of kinds, the following is the centre’s wishlist:

  • Heavy Duty Vacuum Cleaner, 2 units @ RM 1,200 each (to create employment for the mentally-challenged in car wash)
  • 8.5 kg Washing Machine, 1 unit @ RM 1,200 (to be placed at the hostel for the mentally-challenged)
  • 29″ TV, 1 unit @ RM 1,500 (to be placed at the children’s hostel which houses 16 children with multiple disabilities)
  • Metal lockers with 4 compartments, 6 units @ RM 1,400 (for 25 mentally-challenged to keep their personal belongings)

They may not be able to personally thank you for your generous donations but please allow me the honour to do so *smiles*

Note: This is a sticky note. Scroll down for newer posts.

I received this in my mailbox quite some time ago, and I have already signed the online petition.

Action Alert: Support Petition to Save Malaysia’s Belum-Temengor Rainforests Proposed National Park “Richest of the Rich” in Terms of Biodiversity and Ecosystems, Threatened by Logging.

Please respectfully support local initiatives to have Belum-Temengor declared a National Park - Malaysia’s strictest forest of protection - and an end to logging in order to pursue eco-tourism and other ecologically based and sustainable economic development opportunities. Specifically, the alert below asks that the Malaysian government immediately stop all logging activities in the area in order to: gazette the Royal Belum State Park, extend the Royal Belum State Park to include the Temengor Forest Reserve, and develop a management plan based upon local-small scale ecologically based uses.

Sign this online petition and forward the link to your contacts in Malaysia or overseas. Then, ask them to do the same.

Maybe it’s high time YOU did something to the save our forests. It will only take a minute of your time.

Yvonne and LiewCF have been spreading the words around that there is a newborn baby with complex congenital heart disease and needs RM 100,000 for corrective surgery.

It is very nice of them to highlight the plight of the baby in the blogosphere and I really hope the baby gets enough funds to undergo the needed surgery to keep him alive *crosses fingers*

But before we settle the baby’s case, there’s another piece of sad news in Star Metro Central today, and I am reproducing it below:

Teen in need of your help

HE is young and would have many years before him if not for acute myeloid leukaemia.

Wong Kim Yau, 17, from Gopeng, was diagnosed with the condition in 2005 and had several courses of chemotherapy, which led to remission.

The leukaemia, however, relapsed, and doctors in University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) has tried to salvage chemotherapy and are hoping to control his disease.

“Wong is still young, so we are exploring stem cell transplant and are searching for donors,” said Dr Gan. “The search, subsequent tests and transportation of the stem cell from overseas can cost RM240,000.”

The centre has found a donor, but she is not willing to donate her stem cells.

Wong’s father, 46-year-old Wong Kei Loy, is an odd-job worker while his mother, Liew Yoke Chan, 43, is a housewife.

The public can send cheques, payable to “MCA Public Services and Complaints Department” with Wong Kim Yau’s name written at the back.

These can be sent to the department at 7th floor, Wisma MCA, 163 Jalan Ampang, 50450, Kuala Lumpur.

For details, call 03-2161 8044.

I know I am not as well read as you-know-who, but even if this little humble post of mine reaches just one person, I would be glad enough. And if YOU happen to be the ONE person, I would be happier if you could help spread the news around :) That’s the least we could do..
