The massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami has not only killed more than 6,000 people (search and rescue operations are still underway), but destroyed thousands of houses and vehicles and have left more than 400,000 living in temporary shelters too.

In spite of the grim situation and escalating death toll, governments, corporate organizations, celebrities and individuals have come forward to offer assistance and donations, both in cash and in kinds.

One such group is my Mum and her fellow volunteer teammates from the Tzu Chi Foundation. Their first fund-raising activity included going to a residential area after dinner, walking from house-to-house with a simple “Help Japan” poster and Donation Box in hand, clanking gates and knocking on doors. In their first attempt, they managed to raise more then RM 450.

Eager to do better the second time, my Mum (picture below) and her teammates went to a night market, also with a Donation Box in hand, to raise funds. The evening rain did not dampen their spirits, and in return for their hard work and determination, they managed to raise more than RM 2,600 for the earthquake-and-tsunami victims!

This is only an example of what a small community can do in helping a nation in need. If you are in a position to make a donation (remember that no amount is too little), please do. You can walk in to any Tzu Chi Office near your place, or write them a cheque. If you are in a position to raise funds for the victims, either in your company, organization or school/university, please do so. I’m sure thoughts and prayers are appreciated too :D
