A few days ago, I removed quite a lot of “friends” from my Facebook account because I realized that we were not really friends in real life. Yes, I may know you from a friend of a friend, but if I have never talked to you in person, I don’t think we are “friends”. Seriously, what kind of friends are we if we don’t talk? LOL.

I like Facebook. I really do. I think Facebook provides a great way to keeping in touch with friends whom I have not met in a long time. I think it also provides an easy way for me to just say “Hi, how have you been?” or “Happy Birthday” without worrying that my message is too short. Plus, it also provides a decent way to keep myself updated on the whereabouts of my friends — from kindergarten to university ones, blogger friends and friends I have made over the years :)

So yeah, if I have removed you from my Facebook, please don’t take it too personally. It doesn’t mean that I don’t like you. It just means that we need to get to know each other before we can call ourselves “friends” :)

Now, the other thing is with Twitter. I have also just un-followed about 60% of the people in my list because I found it “too much” to go through the whole list of tweets everyday. Like I was telling a friend the other day, I’d hate to miss the tweets that I don’t want to miss, but I can’t bear to go through all the tweets every morning, especially when 95% of the tweets aren’t relevant to me. Plus, it doesn’t help when I live on the other side of the globe from a lot of my Twitter friends.

I don’t have a product to market. I don’t regard myself as a “news-provider” either because I don’t sit in front of the computer the whole day, and I am not living in a place where exciting things happen, LOL. In other words, I don’t have first-hand news to share with my followers. So, I use Twitter to “communicate” with friends instead. When a friend tweets, I will think of a way to respond to the tweet because I feel that it is a great way to keep in touch with a friend, especially when I’m too busy to write an email.

So yeah, how do you use Facebook and Twitter? And if you’re following more than 100 people on Twitter, how do you actually keep tab of what’s happening to who?

  1. Half of my facebook friends are game friends. A handful of those have become real friends – like the cat girls who meet up for breakfast once a month or so. Twitter just isn’t me.

Hey Pelf, when are you next in KL? Call me before you get here? My schedule is crazy but I’d really like to meet up with you.

  2. Michael says:

I use Twitter with an auto feature that automatically replies and follows people who follow me.
I have about 600 people following and followed. Since most everything I do on Twitter is automated, including posts, I dont have to keep track of them. Only thing I do is go in a couple times a week and do some minor maintenance, as in un-following people who I am following but are not following me back and vice versa. Facebook is okay for family matters, but twitter is a non starter for me. I tried it and gave up. I do not have the time for either.

Now we have to extra careful when using Facebook, what I read from the paper today says that the 3rd party developer can access to our profile picture and use it for advertising attraction among your friend. Quite scary though and I urge that you guys check back on the Privacy Setting

  5. Patrick says:

I have a twitter account and facebook account, but only use them occasionally. It takes so much time to keep up with what everybody is doing and to write what I am doing at all times. I don’t mind going on facebook to connect with people I haven’t talked with in years though.

  6. Justin says:

Personally, I use Twitter to communicate as well as a search engine. In Twitter every day, millions of people left a heap of useful information, so if you have never tried to use it as a search engine, then I advise you to try …

  7. Nicole Price says:

I do not twitter for the simple reason that I do not have the time. On facebook too, unless one has a great deal of time, it is impossible to keep track of all that goes on. Some personal friends with who one can share photos etc are alright as that does not take up too much time.

I mainly use Twitter and facebook as a means to stay in contact with my business contacts. I also like the fact the facebook keeps track of birthdays…that way I’ll never miss one again!

  9. Jane says:

I use facebook for networking. I haven’t tried Twitter yet.

  10. The Envoy says:

I use facebook, plurk and twitter but I don’t bother keeping up with each and every plurk or tweet or status change. Just then ones that happan to be interesting and be around at the right place and right time.
