I used to upload quite a number of photos into my Flickr account whenever I return from a vacation or field trip or just about whenever I felt like it. In fact, I have a Flickr PRO account, which allows me to upload however many photos I’d like to upload and have them all visible in my photostream.

But then, somebody in a government department used one of my turtle pictures without giving me, the photographer, any credit. And that prompted me to change the permission level on most of my photos.

You may say that it was only a picture and that wasn’t a big deal. But if you gave it a little more thought, you would see the rationale behind the existence of the creative common licenses. If you wrote an article and published it on your blog, and I copied and pasted it on my blog, you would call that plagiarism. So why would using my photos be any different?

But anyway, I thought I should not live my life getting worried over this and that all the time. So I have kind of decided to resume my photo-uploading ritual, LOL. Moreover, I guess, if somebody really wanted to steal any photos, there were 1,001 ways in which he could do it.

I now have more than 2,300 photos in my photostream, but to view them all, you will have to be my friend (yeah, this is an attempt to make more friends) :D

Your are the best judge as to what you wish to do. I however believe that IPR should be protected and the CCL process is quite useful.

Ugh, that really sucks that the picture was stolen and used that way. I’m glad you’ve decided to share more pictures again, though!

Thanks for your excellent pictures. One thing I worry about is the ones on things like Turtle Camps… that might encourage other people to following in your footsteps or to volunteer for a camp or to send their child to a camp many never been seen by someone who would have done one of those things and then don’t. True they can become a friend and then see them. But I would encourage you to post at least some sets (like those that would encourage others to do interesting things) be public.

I do think it’s a big deal. Lifting a photograph off someone’s page without giving due credit is just wrong.

“yeah, this is an attempt to make more friends” – cute. :D

i actually think that you’re fortunate to know where your picture went. imagine if someone used it without your permission and you didn’t know about it.

but then again, that happens most of the time. (-_-”)

Yeah, I may know that THIS particular picture was used in the brochure, but I am sure there are other pictures used elsewhere that I am not aware of, LOL.

  7. Nicole Price says:

That is always the problem is it not? There is just too much going on in the net to be able to keep track. Best is not to upload important photographs perhaps.

Same here… I have a pro account and I rstricted the copyright because I love to share my pics, IF asken. People…
