OK, I need some professional help, but not THAT kind of help!

You see, when I bought http://chenpn.com/, I had plans to use it as my personal AND professional website. Which means that besides having a blog, I would like to also have a biodata/resume page and a gallery (because I’ve always liked photography). I may think of other relevant stuff in the future, but right now, here’s what I want to do:

  • I want my http://chenpn.com/ to be the index page with navigations to other pages (e.g. Gallery, Resume, Blog, etc.)
  • I want to move my blog into a subdomain, perhaps to http://chenpn.com/blog/
  • I want to create subdomains for my Gallery and Resume

Now, can YOU help me? Or do you know anybody who might be able to help me? I have set aside a TINY budget for this and perhaps we can discuss this a little?

no need to worry - a lot of ppl can help u wan but not me la. i’m the one always looking for help. if not mistaken a subdomain is like eg http://blog.chenpn.com n not http://chenpn.com/blog BUT like i said, i could be wrong!!

There are two types of subdomain, Yvy, and both our examples are correct. Some people prefer the subdomain in front of their domain, e.g. http://blog.chenpn.com but I’d personally prefer the other way round, e.g. http://chenpn.com/blog/.

I wonder if there are any difference between the two? Apart from how the URL looks like?

Yvy is correct. a /blog is called a directory, and a sub.abc.com is called a subdomain.

Wordpress has a feature where you can make any of your blog post resides under a page (thus using the /something domain structure) while having wordpress installed in the domain root. This means that you can have customized homepage, and have all your blog under /blog, gallery under /gallery, and so on and so forth, thanks to to the page feature in wordpress. My blog is using that kind of structure. I have my homepage show one latest post and a few recent post with 2 main projects highlights. When you go to /blog, you will see what most blog has, with sidebar and such…

If you’re planning to use blog.chenpn.com, then all you can do is to install wordpress under the subdomain root.

i advise u to install wordpress in a subdomain (because moving ur wordpress after the installation is quite a pain) root…like
    public_html/blog/

and ur subdomain will be blog.chenpn.com

it makes it easier to manage. then u can do the same with the rest and put them as gallery.chenpn.com, for example.

i jz need a proper main page to direct the traffic.

With her current setup, I believe she doesn’t have to move the wordpress installation if she wants her blog to be in /blog.

Don’t worry la all that can be done using wordpress itself. You can set another page to be the main page, instead of your blog. Try it!
