The theme for this up-coming Postie Carnival is “Happenings in your Neighbourhood.” But since I live in a relatively slow-moving “neighbourhood” (most of us living in the neighbourhood are students, and we don’t host BBQ or steamboats every other day, hence I don’t think there’s anything that will rouse your attention), I’m going to write about the happenings in my country, Malaysia, instead
Now, a lil’ but of introduction should be in place.. The Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2007 campaign was launched on 31st December 2005 and is held in conjunction with the golden jubilee of the nation’s independence and it is designed to make Malaysia a top-of-mind destination; the year-long campaign comprises various promotions and marketing strategies.
The VMY 2007 campaign is the third, following two previous successful campaigns held in 1990 and 1994 and it is expected to increase the number of foreign arrivals to the country to 20 million in 2007.
So what are the highlights of VMY 2007?
Visit Malaysia Year 2007 was launched on January 6th at Lake Titiwangsa in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. And one of the main attractions the whole year round will be none other than the Eye on Malaysia. Also located at Lake Titiwangsa, the “Eye” offers a breathtaking 360-degree-panorama view over 20 kilometres of Kuala Lumpur. There are 40 gondolas with a capacity of six passengers per gondola. Each ride takes about 30 minutes and sends you up to a height of 60 metres.
Then in June, the native Dayaks throughout the state of Sarawak celebrates the Gawai Festival, on June 1st and 2nd every year. The festival marks the joyous moment to celebrate the end of the bountiful harvest season.
And if you’re into SCUBA-diving, you shouldn’t miss this — The Malaysian International Dive Expo 2007 (MIDE ‘07) — a consumer and trade exhibition event held for the second consecutive year to promote world-class diving destinations.

The main objective of this 3-day event is to promote Malaysia and its region as a diving haven for international and local divers and to boost the interest of soon-to-be divers. Plus, it will also serve as a platform to create the awareness among the community and interest in the underwater world. Interestingly, MIDE’07 will focus on conservation, i.e. to protect our coral reefs, the leatherback turtles and other endangered species in our waters.

Last but not least, The Monsoon Cup will be held from November 28th to December 2nd in Pulau Duyung, Terengganu (yes, where I’m currently staying). It is part of the World Match Racing Tour international sailing circuit, and the Tour’s first Asian venue. Since its debut in 2005, the event put Pulau Duyong, Terengganu on the world sailing map, attracting the world’s top-ranking sailors to compete in this prestigious event. But of course, apart from the Monsoon Cup itself, other events are also held in conjunction with the Monsoon Cup to showcase the rich heritage of the state of Terengganu.
See you in Malaysia!
