I got the idea to write about the Malaysian advertisements (or otherwise known as commercial breaks) from Zeroimpact who blogged about a touching ad by ASTRO. So I fired up YouTube and found some really good ads by Petronas that I think everybody should watch
Note: Click the PLAY button, then PAUSE it. Then click the PLAY button again after the whole video clip loads. Enjoy
(1) For the benefit of those NOT staying in Malaysia, this ad appeared on our TVs this year, in conjunction with Chinese New Year. The background music is entitled “Commitment”, sung by a well-known local singer, Victor Michael Wong (thanks, Eileen, for correcting me).
(2) The second ad was aired during Chinese New Year in 2006. The old ladies were bragging about their sons and how much they make, except for one. When the ladies were finished, they turned to ask one of their friends who didn’t seem to talk much during their meal. She humbly said that her son was doing well, and that he was coming to pick her up. Check out the green faces of the other ladies whose children were abroad making big bucks but didn’t come back to celebrate Chinese New Year with their mums.
(3) The third ad was aired during Hari Raya in 2006. D*mn touching, this one.. With English subtitles.
(4) This fourth ad was aired during Chinese New Year in 2005. It was the year of the Rooster, hence the chicken-shaped piggy-bank the grandson gave his grandma. It’s got English subtitles, so yea, I hope you enjoy it
Did the ads do anything to you?
If you think this post might benefit other bloggers:

hey pelf.. yup i love this ad too! Yup.. i love the background song too!
by the way, the song sang and composed by Michael Wong. hehe.. Hugs =)
pelf: Thanks, Eileen, for alerting me, I’ve made the changes
Trust Yasmin Ahmad to come up with those great ads.
She’s really a great story-teller.
pelf: I’m sorry if I sound ignorant.. But those ads were Yasmin’s ideas? I’m impressed..!
You caught me too
I love ads actually, more than the shows they show on tv
I think I only sort of watch ads only, the reason for having a tv for me… may be not
pelf: I don’t mind watching ads like those, frankly speaking.. Not those crappy ones (poor English, poor co-ordination, meaningless ads)
Speaking about ads, do you remember that Petronas ad for CNY where they had two rival families trying to win a lion dance competition? Man I so wanna see that ad again hehe
pelf: I found it, Merv!! It’s here.
Great post! I cry over commercials too.
pelf: Aww…
Those were great ads. I am bawling!
pelf: *smiles*
That was neat to see ads from other areas… I liked the one of the women talking, and the son picking her up..
pelf: Not surprisingly, it reflects the true colours of our society..
That was really neat to see commercials from your country!
That third one was so touching! And so sad.
pelf: And sooo real.. Which is bad
Wow, those are really nice. Makes you think. Nice to see commercials from other countries. We are basically all people who want the same things. To be loved!
pelf: Exactly!
BUT sadly, LOVE is also what we’re losing
Thank you so much for sharing those commercials! They really were pretty good and it was interesting to see what kinds of things aired in other countries.
pelf: You’re most welcome. I’m glad you liked them
Thanks for sharing these with us, pelf! :-)
pelf: No prob
I’m such a sap - I’m always tearing up at commercials!
pelf: Wow.. You must have very good ones showing in your country!
I don’t cry over everything anymore lol
I’ve cried over commercials, magazines, you name it and I’ve probably cried on it!
pelf: Sounds like ME!
I’ve cried over cartoons too!
Pelf, thanks for sharing these.. I hardly watch TV and some were new to me. Know what? I felt a tear welling up my left eye when I watched the last one. It wasn’t because you asked “did it do anything to you?” either; cos I had left the tab open far a while and came back to it later. I love those ads… and the message they bring. I hope it makes a difference to people’s lives and not just move our hearts for a while.
pelf: Thanks for the kind words — not that I produced the ads!
