My father has a very weird habit. Well, I call it weird because I can’t seem to understand why he does what he does most of the time. Like how he recently bought two Kipling sling bags for Mei Mei and I while he was in Thailand. I kind of remember that when we we younger (and when he was still very much a part of our lives), he used to buy Mei Mei and I similar stuff – from shirts to dresses to pants to shoes to necklaces to bracelets, you name it, we have 2 similar items in different sizes. We used to be quite the center of attraction and everywhere we went, people were sure to go, “Oh my God, they’re sooo cute!”
I digressed.
So yea, back to the sling bags. They’re not cheap, you know. Apparently, each bag costs RM 330. I mean, don’t you find it weird that a father buys two similar sling bags which cost RM 330 each to her grown-up daughters??! OK, I anticipate the argument that we will forever be little girls in his eyes, but in reality…? Little girls grow up, you know..
The Kipling bags aside, Mum baked quite a table-full of Chinese New Year cookies recently. In addition to her signature “hua sheng bing” (peanut cookies, or are those groundnuts?), according to the spokesperson, she also baked her first batch of pineapple tarts and chocolate-flavoured cookies with lots of chipsmore and the others I can’t remember. Mei Mei has yet to MMS me a picture of the table-full of cookies.
On another note, the preparations for Chinese New Year in Kuala Terengganu is practically non-existent. There are no road-repair works, no beautification projects, the red red lanterns are not being put up along the main road, no Chinese New Year songs being played in Chinatown. So sad :(
Addendum: Check out this picture Mei Mei sent me this morning. My Mum is a super-mum, don’t you think so? She baked all these cookies by herself! :)

if its any consolation, there’s not much happening with CNY here in Melbourne also lah.. enjoy your sling bag!
pelf: Hhahaa.. Yea, I’ll enjoy carrying my sling bag everywhere – it’s expensive, you know, kekeke :)
CNY cookies! *drool* I haven’t celebrated real CNY M’sian style in more than 10 years :(
Send me your mom’s recipes!! Hehhe!
pelf: I can do this :) But that will be after I meet her during CNY, if you don’t mind :)
Ha … I don’t know anywhere where they actually repair roads for CNY lah.
Road repairs out of the blue usually means election day is near =P
pelf: Shh.. I was just trying to show that it’s very quiet here in KT la, nothing much is happening despite CNY being just around the corner :)
Festival preparations are really tedious… fun… but tedious :o) We like chi gu (ngar gu) chips, but expensive, aren’t they?
pelf: Not sure if the chi gus are expensive because we “youngsters” don’t do the shopping, hahahah, we just
eatfeast :)RM330 for that bag? a bit extreme, innit? esp if you can get a similar one at chow kit… unless you’re rich la, den diff la…
pelf: Yes la, UNLESS I’m rich la, but I’m not, obviously :)
Your father’s weird habit could have been derived from his love towards his two darlings! The thought of getting something for the both of you thrills him I guess. :)
pelf: Thrills him? You have a wonderful imagination, Grace, hahhaa :)
Your mum can really bake!
pelf: Oh yes, she can :)
Wow, at least we know your blog has been spruced up and in CNY mood! Anyway the less festivity you see now would only built up for the climax when you actually go home become the cookie monster again ;)
pelf: Hehhehe, I was never a cookie monster – always the cake monster :)
