I have just spent a very big portion of the day implementing Google Adsense as well as reading up on it to avoid being banned by Google. I tried to read the TOS, I really did, but I just couldn’t digest anything more than the basic no-more-than-three-ads-in-a-page and do-not-click-on-your-own-ads terms. Now can somebody please direct me to websites that translate the Google Adsense TOS into simple-digestible-English? Or better still, just tell me directly what are the things I should never ever do to avoid being banned? *smiles*

OK. If you didn’t notice the Google Adsense ads on my blog until the moment I mentioned it, good. But since I’ve let the cat out of the bag, I’d love it if you would continue to drop by and, I promise, you don’t really have to pay attention to those ads :) I’ll leave them there for the time being, and will think of what I’ll do to them so that the ads can help make me some money to put me through my Master’s degree.

* * * * *

I’d better get going because I am sooo drop dead tired and tomorrow we’re going to Setiu again, to discuss the details of the river terrapin egg-incubation project with the person who had just taken up the offer to incubate the eggs in the vicinity of her kampung house.

Good night.

P/S: Why aren’t my ads the least related to my blog post? And what can I do about it? I mean, aren’t the Adsense ads supposed to “be related to what my visitors are looking for on my site”?

I can see no ad because I have ad blocker installed… :)

Btw, for google adsense, don’t have to worry much about the t&c, just remember not to click your own ads (accidentally or purposely) and don’t ask anyone to do the same.

pelf: Yea, I kinda picked this up already..

Also, there are other ways to earn money from your blog - without affecting your readers. One example is TextLinkAds, you can earn about US$20 a month if you’re lucky. Let me know if you wanna sign up, ok?.. So that I can refer you (and earn money to support my masters too..lol)

pelf: Ouh, you’re doing your Master’s too? I didn’t know that! Yea sure, I’d love to learn more about TLA - no guarantees though :)

A few ads are ok … won’t stop me from coming by. I hate the ones that pop up and the blogs that are obviously just for $$$.

And adsense won’t make you rich, but why not try, right ?

pelf: Yea, I’m not trying to “get rich” by adding those ads.. But for all I know, they can help pay my Slowmyx bills :) (though I’m far from paying any bills now, hhahha..)

They really assign ads based on complex rules, but usually by keywords on your blog. The word kampung might relate to Malaysia for example. So you really have very little control. Just let it be … :)

pelf: Just let it be then..

Ha, you are putting up ads now… basically you don’t get banned by Google Ads easily, provided you dont click on your own ads and over-misdirect your users to click on the ads (notice the word ‘over’).

pelf: OK, so I assume I’ll have to presume where the line is myself?

P/S: Why aren’t my ads the least related to my blog post? And what can I do about it? I mean, aren’t the Adsense ads supposed to “be related to what my visitors are looking for on my site”?

    The reason is simple:

One, because there are not much ads related to your blog. Ever wonder what’s chenpn.com about from an outsider’s view? Turtle, postcards, malaysia, terengganu outings, biomedic research… frankly all these are pretty niche field on the Internet and i bet there are not much people buying ads from Google in the subject. so when Uncle Google is running out of related ads in his inventory, what he does is put up the most relevant ads he can to serve your visitors…

pelf: Makes perfect sense to me :)

Second is due to the geo-targeting function inside Google Adsense… if there are not much of ads from Malaysia in his inventory, people who read your blog from Malaysia won’t have much related ads served - due to the geo targeting issue. (you do know that reader of your site from different places get different ads served, right?)

    pelf: Err.. No, I don’t..

To solve the problem, you can either:
    - write something popular - loads, forex, credit card, computer hostings, apple products,
    - forget about it. :)

pelf: OK. The second option is easier :)

My suggestion of reading, in case you are taking Adsense seriously…
    Learning the Google stats

    Informative Adsense forums

    pelf: Thanks heaps :)
