Let me tell you something funny. Or rather, annoying - because I really don’t find it funny to be juggled like a ball, from one court to the other.

You see, I lost my October posts on the 8th. In fact, my brother realized the missing posts and alerted me, after which I sent an emergency SMS to my sifu. He willingly promised to look into the matter, for which I was very grateful, indeed :) I had “officially lost” five published posts AND comments, and two unpublished drafts - both on breast cancer. My sifu adviced me to contact my host to ask what was going on, and whether they had an up-to-date backup of the database. MY database. And all I got from them was, “We will restore the latest available database from the old server. We will notify you as soon as it has been restored.”

So after discussing with my sifu, I had decided to republish the missing posts, and that was exactly what I did on the 8th. And I even “started blogging as I’d normally do” on the 9th, when I published a post on Julia and her website.

But this morning I received two emails from my host. The first email says, “Our attempt to restore the old account was unsuccessful due to its existence in the new server. Which means we’d have to temporarily terminate your account in order to restore the old one. We will notify you as soon as it is done. We are truly sorry for the inconvenience caused. Thank you for your patience.” And the second one says, “We have restored your account using the last available backup on the old server dated 8.10.2006. Please let us know should you need assistance on anything else. Thank you.”

Are you following me?

My host had just restored my database as of October 8th, over-writing my republished posts and a new post which I made on the 9th!! So now I am back to square one. All the republished posts are gone. And so is the newly-published post on Julia and her website, Honest Medicine.

Maybe I should email my host to give them a piece of my mind.

But maybe not since all my “missing” posts AND comments AND drafts are back.

Haha… Okay what, at least they have the latest backups of your blog. Well, they didn’t do anything wrong actually. Hehe. You can’t have win-win situation. :D

pelf: What do you mean “they didn’t do anything wrong”?! The least they could have done was to tell me about the what was happening and what they planned to do. They could easily write an email and send it to all their customers. That way I would have patiently waited for them to restore my database instead of me doing my own thing, and they doing their own thing!

That’s why I prefer to pay a little bit more and get a smaller company (errm…Bryan is not exactly a company also. :) ) Those big words from the webhost can be very intimidating and give us see stars only hor? Last time I hosted with a big-big company, dem susah, must issue tickets lah, must deal with their staffs in the right department lah etc etc.

pelf: My host is not exactly a BIG company, but yea.. Maybe I should get their phone numbers so that I can contact them anytime I want, instead of sending them emails and getting replies the next day :)

i guess sometimes computer age is like that, harddisk crash, system failure, power failure etc etc. Do backup yourself often also, if they lost their backup too, then you will lose all your post. Then lagi susah.

pelf: Exactly what I was thinking. But I couldn’t be doing backing ups every day, can I?

They didn’t do anything wrong as in, they restored your latest backup / database. That’s what they are supposed to be when their server crash.

But, the wrong part was they didn’t inform you that the server crashed and didn’t tell you what they plan to do until you emailed them.

They thought restoring up till 30th Sept was good enough, when you wanted 8th Oct. Err… Nevermind.

Get a better host when your account expires. :P

pelf: I forgot to tell you - the server didn’t crash (this was what they said) - they moved part of the old server to the new server. I am sure the move was not a last-minute one, and I really expected them to inform their customers.

They move the server and didn’t inform?

Okay, they are very wrong. Shoot them :D

    pelf: Hmm..
