I was running through the State of the World’s Sea Turtles (SWoT) report when I stumbled upon this advertisement.

Guys, dont wet your keyboards, OK? I should NOT be held liable, muaahhaah
Baring the truth for turtles
Throughout Latin America and the world, aphrodiasiacal properties are attributed to sea turtle products, especially turtle eggs. Such beliefs represent an enormous hazard, as they fuel egg harvest and illegal trade in sea turtle products.
To combat this, the famous Argentine model Dorismar donated her time and celebrity status to a creative new campaign to say “My man doesn’t need turtle eggs.. because he knows they do not make him more potent.” Launched in June 2005 by non-profit groups like WiLDCOAST (California, USA) and Fondo de Educacion Ambiental (Environmental Education Fund, Mexico), the campaign is appearing on billboards, at bus stops, on TV, in magazines throughout Mexico and the USA, at North American concerts of famed Mexican band Los Tigres del Norte, and in all Mexican markets where the illegal trade takes place.
The advertisements have fueled public debate that has gained the attention of readers everywhere - including those of the New York Times, the London Times, Associated Press, and Reuters and of 103 other newspapers and magazines in eight languages and more than 130 global websites (now 131).

WOW.
If you think this post might benefit other bloggers:

too late - my keyboard’s wet… LOL
anyways, just wanted to say, “Wow! Nice ad!”.
pelf: Muahahh *grins* Buy a new keyboard la
Wow… seriously.. wow.. how i wish we hav this kinda ad in Msia or whole wide world ( i mean to show them :“My man doesn’t need turtle eggs.. because he knows they do not make him more potent.”). I think now all i can say is Wow… (hee hee hee..)
pelf: That was my exact reaction too
But we all know ads like this will never get published and put up in public. Malaysia is way tooo conservative, which is sometimes good
Yeah, I chanced upon this some time back…however, I just noticed how the model is positioned in the ad, body lying sideways with hands in front and the head prop up, just like a turtle (in a way…). I doubt the advertisers were really going for sexy as the image here… (haha.. sorry, can’t help doing a kind of semiotics reading here).
Malaysian ads, good idea, but I don’t think people will point to the aphrodisiacal thing (do pp In Malaysia believe the same thing about turtle eggs? I don’t think so)
pelf: Didn’t you know that the local communities living at the coastal areas ALL think the same? When you ask any of the men the benefits of eating turtle eggs, chances are they will say “Boleh jadi kuat”. Now, try ask them, “Apa boleh jadi kuat?” I did that once, but the fisherman just ignored me.
Though, we could have someone do some kind of adverts for the turtles… Perhaps, Pelf can be in it, smiling and holding a cute little turtle? or your supevisor’s daughter, since she featured for Monash in the papers? or wait…maybe a fishermen instead, since the ads would target part of the fishing community, to an extent.
pelf: Pelf is very bad at modelling. There was once the Star photographer came to do a photoshot of me with the terrapins. He had to take like 82 pictures before he finally said “OK, this is natural enough.” He said I was very stiff, muahhha
Oh, BTW, did you read an article in the Star (some time back) about this local guy who conserves turtle egg at Pulau Gemia by himself, only to be shunned, since other people thought he was keeping them for himself. oops, I wrote too long a comment liao, apologies.
pelf: Yes, I read about it
I also had the chance to meet one of his foreigner volunteer last year
SERIOUS… pelf’s supervisor featured for MONASH (Msia or AUSSie)? is it for Bachelor of COmm? OMG.. i never realise that. Guess i must go back to Monash Msia.. to check all the pamphlets.. Man..
pelf: Pelf’s Supervisor’s daughter la, sayang.. But she hated the ad because she said she wasn’t informed prior to the interview that her pictures would be published..
Ya.. Pelf.. u can give it a try!! hehe.. u are photogenic !
pelf: *shrugs* I’d rather spend my time brushing my Photoshop skills than to model for an ad
opp.ss.. sorry. Mistakes. Anyway, tmr i’ll check it out!! wah haa… yeah my the other friend also said the same thing. She wasn’t informed too.. sigh!!
pelf: Those people are so good at manipulating fresh graduates! Hmmph!
