I need help!!

I have been trying to backup my database since yesterday morning but to no avail. You see, I made it a point to backup my stuff every Friday, eversince the incident that happened two months ago. So yesterday morning, I was doing the routine backup but the backup was never completed.

The most progress must have been about 70%. Nothing more. And I have tried refreshing the backup process countless times.

I thought the connection must have been slow (or weak, or whatever) yesterday, so I tried again this morning. The same thing happened, only worse. The blue bar never went beyond 50% *pulls hair*

Now, can anybody please tell me what the problem is? Please…??? By the way, I am using Scott Merrill’s WordPress Database Backup version 1.7.

By any chance, were you trying to also back up your spam filter or statistic databases? It isn’t the fact that its failing, it’s the fact that some databases have too much data in them that they take a long long long time to back up. Just don’t select them and continue as usual. You should be able to back it up well.

pelf: But when the backup process stops, it says DONE. And that gave me the idea that the whole thing stopped responding..

it seems 1.7 is still new, and going through a lot of errors, so try going through the comments in this page:

hope that helps. if not, can always try the tried and true method of backing up via phpmyadmin, even though it can be a pain. Good luck!

pelf: I am sure nothing is wrong with the plugin because I just successfully backed up my database last Friday.. And I didn’t want to go through ALL the comments, that was why I put it up here, for tech-savvy people to advice me lar *winks*

And oh, I tried the phpmyadmin method and it’s kinda easy to do! This coming from someone who’d just done her first backup. *sheepish*

Use the instructions here… but I’m sure you already found it.

pelf: Yeah, you were right, I found that particular link, but dared not mess with anything that didn’t look familiar to me. So I just kind of ignored the instructions la ;) And I took your advice, but my backup file is greater that 4MB in size, is THAT normal?

It’s just being cranky. Time of the month and all for your wordpress. Hehe

pelf: Time of the month your head la. Haven you taken today’s medicines, my dear? Kekekkee :))

Pray Pelf…Pray and then do it.God bless your blog.

pelf: *whoa* Suddenly so holy ar..? OK, I’ll pray and do it :)

Whoa… 4MB! How long have you had your blog? It’s possible that you’ve backed up spam filters or other misc plugin info, but I wouldn’t be too worried about file size - as long as everything is backed up. My SQL file (backup) is about 1.83MB and the zip file 492KB.

Or, here’s another thing I just thought about. When you backup using phpmyadmin, if your SQL is being used by another program (meaning you’ve created another database) it will save that particular data too.

pelf: Err.. My blog is 2 months old..? Kkekeke.. OK, will check what I backup this Friday.. Like you said, I would have backed up a lot of unnecessary stuff :)

You only have to back up your MySQL database, the rest you can let it be. You can do that by clicking on the Back Up option at your cPanel.

pelf: Thanks for the advice, will try it out ;)

    Not holy la hehehehe
No, won’t be wearing a robe anytime soon

    pelf: Muahahaha.. So “humble”..

Uncheck the other misc parts when backing up so that Wordpress only backsup your default database. See if it backs up normally from there. If it does, it was probably some over stat or spam database that it backed up. Those are big, take a long time and usually times out.

Go with the default, you’d never go wrong there.

pelf: No, Ed.. I unchecked all the additional boxes, and yet the backup failed.. :( I’m sooo going to tear my hair out..

I think your server might be the problem. For the past few days of commenting, I’ve been getting a timeout everytime I comment. Might be a small thing related to your backup, but it’s worth talking to your webhost about.

pelf: Yes, I noticed it too.. Will contact them :)
