Yeah, you read that right. So what about Akademi Fantasia?!
Note: I am NOT against anybody related to Akademi Fantasia or its viewers/supporters or whatever you call them. I am just airing my views..
I just learned the other day that the results of the Akademi Fantasia reality show depended solely on the votes casted by supporters. How absurd. I thought reality shows like the Malaysian Idol, Mentor and Akademi Fantasia are supposed to highlight the contestants’ performance instead of their popularity?!
No doubt, the Akademi Fantasia show is like a second opportunity for artists like Vince but that was because he really can perform! Every other Tom, Dick and Harry are following the herds just to claim their 5-second fame when snippets of their performance is aired.
I agree that one of the ways to increase viewership is to involve the viewers in the selection of the best performers. This could be done by casting votes, no doubt. But to allow each viewer unlimited votes is like allowing every rakyat to vote for their MPs unlimited times. Does this sound fair to you?
Whatever happened to the one-vote-per-person idea?! Isn’t this fairer to the contestants? By allowing multiple votes per person, the winner of the reality show may not be the best but the most popular. And if this carries on, our reality shows will be producing popular artists-wannabe and those who really can perform will be sidetracked. Is this the initial objective of Akademi Fantasia? To produce popular youngsters who wouldn’t mind appearing on instant noodles wrappers and tongkat ali drinks, and who do not mind being highlighted in the media for their messed-up private lives?!
And if the winner of the Akademi Fantasia episode is to be decided by the number of votes a contestant receives, why the need to have judges? It will not matter whatever the judges say because if one is a die-hard fan of a contestant, he will still vote for him regardless.
At the end of the day, the only winning party is STILL the telecommunication company that charges RM 0.60 for each SMS.

That’s the thrill of it. We cannot control who wins except the sms votes. The judges do sway the opinions of the voters. Like the American Idol? Sometimes, they use negative psychology, assuring the person he will win and that gives the voters the idea they should vote for the other fav. contestant (assuming it is not the final two) to keep him/her alive. And it is good to see the judges bulldoze the contestants down in public. We can see the grace of a person right there, live. And guess what? I did vote for Vince (AF1) before! But after that the contests pretty much sucks ‘cos the students all know what to expect, unlike the first AF, when they aren’t aware they are being watched. Now we got drama queens and kings vyving for the camera.
pelf: Oh yes, we CAN control who wins, if by “we” you meant “the viewers”.. American Idol is different in such that the judges’ comments were taken into consideration APART from the votes cast by fellow supporters. But in Akademi Fantasia, it all depends on the votes - a particular contestant WILL win if he is handsome but sings like a duck.. You get what I mean..?
i only watched their finals and cast at least one vote. yeah, i guess thats how Mawi won! because he’s popular but is he talented enough to be compared to people like Vince? all he ever sings are nasyid songs. how u gonna bring tht internationally?

totally agree. In the end, it’s the telcos that gets the earnings. 60cents is freaking alot. I’ve never liked akedemi fantasia, not as authentic as M’idol and 1 in a million.
